Project overview

SkiComCu – Lifelong Learning Course for skills & competences in the Copper sector is a European project focused on delivering a lifelong learning programme for the copper industry, addressing critical skills gaps linked to sustainability, digitalisation and industrial transformation.

The project develops innovative training solutions that combine technical, digital, and soft skills, preparing current and future professionals to meet the evolving demands of the EU raw materials and metals industry.

By aligning with Industry 4.0 & 5.0, the green transition, and circular economy principles, SkiComCu contributes to strengthening Europe’s competitiveness in strategic raw materials.

Objectives

SkiComCu is designed to tackle the growing mismatch between industry needs and workforce capabilities in the copper sector. Its main objective is to create a flexible and forward-looking lifelong learning programme that equips professionals with the skills required for a changing industrial environment.

The project focuses on supporting the green and digital transition by integrating sustainability practices, circular economy principles, and advanced technologies into its training approach. At the same time, it promotes inclusivity by encouraging participation from women, young professionals, and underrepresented groups, helping to build a more diverse and future-ready workforce.

The Challenge

The European copper sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by technological innovation and environmental priorities. Companies must adapt to Industry 4.0 and 5.0 developments while reducing their environmental footprint and improving resource efficiency.

Despite this shift, access to continuous and industry-aligned training remains limited. Skills gaps persist in areas such as digitalisation, sustainability, and circular economy practices, restricting the sector’s ability to innovate and remain competitive.

Addressing these challenges requires new approaches to education, ones that are flexible, scalable, and closely connected to real industrial needs.

Impact

Project Facts

SkiComCu is a 36-month project (September 2023 – August 2026), supported by EIT RawMaterials and co-funded by the European Union.

The consortium brings together 9 partners across Europe working on training and innovation in the copper value chain.
